Britain...Still getting liquored up.

Postby eddie2003 on Thu Jan 21, 2010 10:19 am

I see there is a new report that people in Britain are still getting drunk at an alarming rate...What up, Tennessee?

Doesn't surprise me. We've got one of the 'worst' alcohol consumption rates in Europe. Not exactly news. The thing that is possible 'news' is that the Government may 'put up' the prices on alcohol by forcing sellers to have a minimum price per alcohol unit. It'll mean Tesco's can't sell home-brand super cheap tinnies of lager to binge drinking chav's anymore. It'll also mean the rest of us have to pay more for alcohol in general- whether you drink a lot or not. Good old nanny state style thinking ;-)

The Conservatives dont want to hammer the publicans anymore. They would target the supermarkets, which are the problem in my opinion.

I haven't read that policy, though I'd rather than didn't target pubs in the way that was originally proposed. Though the problem with some pubs, clubs or alcohol supplier chains is that they run these promotions, which basically target young people. It's either extended 'happy hour' drinking, or promotions where you buy one and get one free, or even some where if you bring your 'girlfriend' then she gets a free drink etc. It's aimed at young people drinking 'alcopops', or that kind of thing. I don't mind them curbing some of these types of promotions in pubs. As for supermarket chains, I agree that it's probably bad that young people can buy certain brands of alcohol so cheaply (something should be done about that), but again if you just drastically raise the alcohol per unit price it can effect everyone whether they're a binge drinker or not. I guess it depends on how they do it, or how much they raise the per unit prices.

The article in USA Today that I saw said that the British government is banning something called the Dentist Chair...In which a person at a pub opens their mouth, and the hose in inserted in the mouth.

Insert joke here.

Hah! Not by a long shot. The college days are l-o-n-g over. That kind of consumption of alcohol would kill us.
Besides, WB makes a fine brew that would be a shame to not actually taste in the rush to get all liquored up.
