Leapin' Bambis!

It's amazing that the deer and the policeman both walked away without a scratch from their near run-in. To say nothing of the car.

I don't even have to click on the link as I saw this on the news yesterday. Both the deer and the police officer are bloody lucky!

Aww I'm so glad it had a happy ending for both the cop and the deer. Not long after we moved up here we encountered a horse running down the middle of one of our main streets. He wasn't stopping for anybody but all of the vehicles came to a halt. I never did find out how they caught him.

I'd rather deal with a horse running down the street than a deer.

Yes I hear you do a lot of chasing yer horse down the street in Wisconsin ...I've heard it's one of most popular forms of entertainment next to cow tipping, blowing bubbles and watching Dr. Phil.

Aww! What a sweet story, Karen. I'm glad the duck family made it to safety. Who says lawyers don't have hearts?

I remember seeing the banker catching the ducklings a few weeks ago. I guess what the banker didn't know was that the ducklings would have made is just fine on their own. Jerry, across the street from us has an oak tree which was damaged years ago by lightening and it has a hollow in it. Every year a pair of Barred Owls nest in it, but one year a pair a Whistling Ducks nabbed it first. This hollow is about 30 to 40 high. We watched as the ducks came and went, and wondered what the heck the ducklings would do when hatched.

One morning - before light, I heard a commotion in our back garden, and there was Momma duck with five ducklings in tow heading towards our back fence which has a gap in it, to woods behind us. There is a small pond back there, and she was taking them there. The babies had jumped out of the nest soon after they hatched.

:smt020 Oops! Who knew bankers have hearts. Thanks, Jen.

There's a sculpture in the Boston Public Gardens based on the book Charlie Gibson mentioned, Make Way For Ducklings. Posing for pictures on the mama duck's back is a favorite thing for kids to do when they visit the city.

I was already familiar with Make Way for Ducklings when we moved to Massachusetts when I was six. Not long after we moved, I got to go on a Swan Boat at the Public Garden, and the guide pointed out a mallard family on a small island that we passed, which he said was the family from the book - I was thrilled!

Of course, every so often someone steals one of the baby ducks from the sculpture.

As one of the comment said, not all bankers are wankers :smt001 Of course we already knew that with knowing Bonnie.

Fawns are so curious, I've seen them out here at the water plant and the lawn mowing crew hand feeding them and I've been out hunting and had them come right up to the blind and just look in not scared or anything. They are so very cute as well

No of course not, there's not enough meat on them anyway. However if you wait a couple of years then they look quite nice on a plate with taters and a veg. :smt023 :smt023

Then it was on the wrong diet and prepared absolutely wrong! Corn fed deer end up with a taste very similar to beef, only without all the fat.

I grew up in post war England when beef etc was very scarce, so we ate a lot of venison and wild game. I remember liking it, but I do not care for the venison (white tailed deer) here. I really can't can't remember what kind we had in England, but probably the red deer and fallow deer.

It does have a lot to do with diet as Beth said, but also the variety of the animal.

I made venison tacos two nights ago; very good. I like doing up the roasts with a lot of onion.

There is alot of things that contribute to taste, up here the deer have so much corn to eat that they are much like cattle and very tender. KW didn't care for the buck I shot last year but in previous years I've taken does and they taste less gamey. During the rut, bucks can taste diffferent because of all the hormones surging through them. I do all my own butchering so knowing what glands to remove during cleaning can lessen that. It's almost huntin' season and I'm ready to get out :smt026 :smt023

Bambi ran like hell this morning. We lost a good portion of fence between us and our next door neighbor in hurricane Ike. It's Deborah's fence and she cannot afford to replace it and frankly it's no big deal as neither of us have dogs anymore.

But FF to a short while ago. The guys were here to do our lawn and garden and there was a very small fawn (complete with spots still) in Deborah's back yard. The poor little thing was terrified of the noise the blowers made and the only way out was where the fence is no more. It also started raining and as the guys had finished we were all standing in our garage talking when all of a sudden the fawn came charging from next door towards us, came about 5 feet from us, saw us and made an abrupt left turn and went full speed down our driveway and down the road. I do hope his mum is somewhere close. :smt005
