Old hat

Postby ukus on Wed Jan 27, 2010 8:09 pm

I was reading an article that a handshake is fast becoming a thing of the past. Not only as a gentleman's seal of the deal but just as a greeting between people.
It was always said you could judge a man by his handshake and a limp weak handshake did not sit well for it's owner.

It’s been the most popular way to greet someone since medieval times but now handshaking may be dying out.
Knights would extend their hands to each other to show they were not holding a weapon and to keep a potential assailant at arm’s length.
But it seems this tradition is being consigned to history. Research shows that fewer than half of young people shake hands.
Teens are more likely to bump fists because they think it is less formal..

We still shake hands but then we are ol' fogies .... do you still greet with a handshake?

I shake hands with patients but thats because there's a professional relationship.

I might shake hands with someone I'd not met before or someone a fair bit older than me, but I wouldnt hsake hands with friends or close family.

I used to shake hands at work. I hated it because people just don't know how to shake hands anymore. Sometimes it was like they were extending a herring instead of a hand. I don't shake hands when meeting people in a social setting.

I usually shake hands with my mates- though more if I haven't seen them for a while, and I shake hands with my old man and brother when I see them or say goodbye (though nowadays my brother and I often give each other a hug- in a 'manly' way of course :smt002 as we don't see each other that much). With business related greetings and good byes, and depending on the circumstances, I always give a handshake- that's just par for the course, it's a formal part of our mainstream professional culture and isn't going to change. You can't give 'em a fist bump (I guess unless you work in some areas of the so called 'creative' media world)! I now have a little comedy picture in my mind of a person trying to go with the fist bump while the other is going in there for the handshake.

Of course. Now that I've been single for a little while, I do occasionally shake hands with the unemployed whilst in between temporary contracts......

I think the handshake will always be around in business circles, I agree that there is nothing worse than a limp, sweaty palmed handshake and of course the opposite which is the bone crusher. I don't see the fist bump taking over in the corporate world, like your in a sports bar or something. Although with the increase of germaphobe's in the world quite possibly the traditional handshake will be accompanied with a spritz of handsanitizer :smt012

I guess I really don't even think about it as I extended my hand to several people I just met yesterday...and they all shook my hand. I really didn't think about it until reading this.

People still shake hands quite a bit. When I went to my friend's birthday party, practically everybody shook my hand as we were introduced (I've probably met most of them before, but only about once every few years, so nobody can remember). Except for my high school friend Steve, whom I met out in the parking lot, and who hugged me so hard I thought my boobs were going to pop! He's a big guy (tall, not fat), and we hadn't seen each other in a few years.

That's a good one too :smt002
but that tingly hand falling asleep feeling might prove distracting to the task at hand

:smt012

But all the same it does keep it interesting and who wants a boring "handshake"

Aye. It's the limp-wristed handshakes you gotta watch out for. Or, so I've been told....

Y'know what's funny. I went into central London today to meet up with some old clients/acquaintances, and of course there was quite a bit of hand shaking going on (I mean normal handshaking ;-)). It made me think of this thread. I'd never really thought of the whole shaking hands thing before as if it's an 'issue', it's just something you do. Mind you, no one was under 25....

I think you and I have done a very successful job of turning this thread into innuendo. It's not possible to have a serious conversation about 'handshaking' anymore without it, perhaps, also meaning something else.....

Excellent work!!!

You do realise now that if per chance you and I ever met one day, we aren't going to be able to greet each other normally without it being very funny.
