Is it just me, or has the forum gone suddenly really slow and unresponsive tonight....

For me also - but then for the past couple of days it has been slow for me on other boards. I was blaming Charter!

I've already been having problems with my internet anyway over the last few days (it conked out again yesterday temporarily), so I don't know whether it's the PRT or at my end. But I found it slow tonight when posting responses.

I'll remove it tomorrow, if Sean doesn't first- or a Mod doesn't move it. Can't be bothered right now logging into Admin to do it.

Moderators can only move the messages to the Spam vault they can't delete the Spammer from our membership list. I've already emailed Sean as I'm finding it still slow submitting posts.

Not sure if that's got anything to do with the speed on the forum though.

...Yeah we had another one today that I had to get rid of as well. It's very satisfying in a weird way!

This has nothing to do with why the forum has suddenly become a little slow recently, when posting, though. It's just merely spam. I don't know why the forum is still slow when posting right now.

Y'know it's weird. I've now got rid of five or so spammers in the last few days since that last one, including this morning. What's with the sudden spam. These guys having a lil' spam party all of a sudden...?

Hey Ben,

Thanks much for this.

I've made a few tweaks to the registration security today so hopefully it will slow down or even eliminate the spammers for good this time.

Basically, spammers eventually figure out how to overcome the various schemes and then we have to ratchet up the defenses.

The forum software is also in need of upgrading in general as it is, which I hope to complete in the next month or so.

This should offer some additional options re: spammers as well.

Best,

Sean

What about the slowness of posting. The rest of the board is fine but it takes an age for a post to 'go through'.

Not the Russians!?! Maybe it's one of the spies that got sent back. This board is a wealth of top secret information after all, what with all of discussions of pets, food and farts.

Its not kicking me out but it is still verrrrry sloooooow posting.

I also have another slight problem. Ben, when you moved that PAXO post to the spam vault, I cannot get the thread to show 'read'. I always shows as being 'unread'. Can you just remove that whole thread please? Its not like there's anything earth moving on it and I'm sure everyone who wants to, has read it.

Just opening the thread was not changing its status to 'read', but then I used the option to mark all posts in that forum as read, and that did the trick for me.

I think Jenn was actually referring to the part of the spam on the thread I moved to the Mods Lair (which became a separate thread in there), but that's a good idea overall Juana. I've had that occasionally on the forum as well.

Just so everyone knows, we don't ever delete (or remove/move) threads unless there's a very good reason too, ie there's something majorly going on a thread with posters that seriously breaks the basic forum rules. We virtually never have to do that though. Someone putting spam on an existing thread is not a reason to delete the entire thread. We just remove the spam post. A thread actually put up by a spammer, in order to spam, will get deleted though. So I wouldn't ever bother posting on any of them :smt002

We have another technical problem on here I noticed in the last few days. Sometimes when you click on a thread you get a blank page with the words 'Done' at the bottom of your browser. You have to go back again, and click on it again, to read the thread.

It may not be a problem with the board. I had it happen several times the last few days. Some others on the Reiman's board were having a problem there and Bonnie who lives in NJ posted this...

Bonitading_NJ replied on Mon, Jul 19 2010 12:21 PM

I do believe the issue over the weekend was due to some technical error online between Microsoft and something else. There were numerous reports of all kinds of things happening with different browsers supporting the windows platforms over the weekend.

Even email programs were affected. Some people were not getting email all weekend and they showed up today.

I don't think its just the BB. I have IE installed on my computer, although I do not "log in" through it. Its just there, although when I have used it I never had a problem.

I also use firefox, but taught myself how to fix their recent upgrade that was messing up PC's and I have not had any problems since fixing it myself.

Google chrome is installed on my PC as well, I had to utilize that when the firefox upgrade messed up my adobe flash player, which I then used google chrome to get that issue fixed.

its all working fine.

Until some idiot decides they want to push a wrong cyber button out there in cyber land again and attack people's computers once more.

Mind you, even that hasn't protected me from these internet shenanigans this evening. I've had the 'Done', followed by a *blank* page, all night on the first three or so times I try to post on each thread. We definitely have a problem with this right now.
