Michael Foot (Labour Leader in the seventies and early eighties who was finally, yet very brutally- but also rightly in my view, defeated by Margaret Thatcher in 1979).

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8547228.stm

I was, and still am, about as utterly opposed to his political views as you can possibly get. But he was a great Parliamentarian in many ways as a individual, and he had a good heart about social issues- even if I think he was very deeply misguided in his ideas about solutions. He's also one of the last links to the original Labour political 'movement' from during and after the second world war- which is interesting merely from historical POV. That was a time in Britain's political history when, both left and right wing, politicians in this country were utterly opposed to Hitler's Germany- and stood resolutely together at the same time completely as one, in unison. But later also both utterly opposed about how Britain should move forward after the war as a country- particularly economically and socially.

It's interesting how all those original ideas of that time (from both sides) have transcribed, embedded, or changed and evolved with the times today. They're still trying to work out the best solutions, after we've reached this point we are in today. Yet look at how far, or how much, Britain has changed since then....

Legendary Boston weatherman Don Kent died a few days ago, at the age of 92. He was a local institution, and did TV weather forecasts from 1947 until 1983. Around here, I think you could say that he was the weather equivalent of Walter Cronkite - people trusted his forecasts. Most of the local weathermen got into the business after being inspired by him.

I do, Juana. A fixture of the 80s on local TV. You could always rely on his forecasts and his ability to make people smile, no matter what the weather. He had a unique charm.

He'll be missed.

Andree Peel, a WWII French resistance heroine, has died at 105.

She saved the lives of 100 people and survived a Nazi death squad.

Mrs Peel, who lived at Long Ashton, was awarded a second Legion d'Honneur in 2009 to mark her bravery.

After the war she received a personal letter from Winston Churchill congratulating her on her work.

She also received the Croix de Guerre and the American Medal of Freedom.

She was being lined up to be shot by a firing squad at the Buchenwald concentration camp when the US Army arrived to liberate the prisoners

Peter Graves Died at age 83.
http://www.nytimes.com/reuters/2010/03/15/arts/entertainment-us-graves.html?_r=1&scp=3&sq=peter%20graves&st=cse

Actually we've missed a number of deaths the last few days.

Corey Haim died the other day at age 38.
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/11/arts/11haim.html?scp=2&sq=corey%20haim&st=cse

And Merlin Olsen died at age 69.
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/12/sports/football/12olsen.html?scp=1&sq=merlin%20olsen&st=cse

And that concludes today's celebrity death trifecta.

Ashok Kumar MP

Cleveland Police said they were called to Mr Kumar's home in Marton, Middlesbrough, at 1230 GMT on Monday.

"Officers entered the property and found the body of a man in his 50s. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics," a statement said.

"At this stage it is too early to say whether the death is being treated as suspicious and inquiries are ongoing."

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8568583.stm

Mr Kumar had been MP for for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland since 1997, after representing Langbaurgh for a year from 1991.

I saw that the other day as well Bonnie. It's a little bit of a shocker to see one of the '80's Brat Packers shuffle their mortal coil- if you're from that generation. Not that I was a fan or anything, it's just a bit weird.

Wasn't there another 'Corey' as well? I can't really remember some of them, it was such a long time ago.

The other thing I find a little strange (and sad) these days is occasionally seeing Michael J Fox with his degenerative medical condition. Full respect to the guy for the way he deals with it. I wasn't necessarily a 'big' fan back in the day, but he was an iconic actor of that generation- even though I think he was a tad bit older at the time than the parts he played back then.

Yeah, Corey Feldman, yet another child actor who has failed miserably in making the transition to a responsible adult. He's had his troubles with the law & with drugs as well. It's almost a cliche now. A child actor whose career soon fizzles, goes broke, and then they spend their adulthood trying to recapture at least some of their former fame. Very few succeeding as such. In the interim, they get hooked on booze & drugs and try to keep their names in the tabloids. "Any publicity is good publicity, good or bad" is the mantra of the strange, twisted and wacky world of Hollywood celebrities. It's all quite pathetic IMO.

I watched a few of the reality show the 'two Corey's' and Cory Haim was having drug problems then. He and Cory Feldman starred in 'Lost Boys" together and their relationship strained when Feldman married (which I think didn't last) and Cory Haim had his drug problem.

It is a great shame but ya know I don't think that being a child star and then being put on the back burner is a good excuse for messing up your life. There are a number of ex child stars who have struggled but gone on to make good in the 'real world' .... and let's face it we all have disappointments in life that would provide a good excuse to go off the rails.
I know I am being hard here but although I am saddened that a young life ended so sadly he has to take some responsibility for the way he chose to live and end his life.

That said may all who have been mentioned sleep peacefully.

The quote that's been used by Lydon in the national press today was in the Times article:

John Lydon, issued a tribute signed Johnny Rotten, the name he used as lead singer of the Sex Pistols: “For me Malc was always entertaining, and I hope you remember that. Above all else he was an entertainer and I will miss him, and so should you.”

So, I'm not sure exactly how The Pistols feel about his death. They had problems in the end and McLaren was more of an impresario who was playing his own game in the industry. He used The Pistols, but then again they used him.

I forgot to mention John Forsythe very recently. I always liked him a lot. He was handsome (at all ages), and seemed like a nice guy. He died on April 1, at the age of 92.

When I was a little kid in the 60s, I loved him on Bachelor Father, in which he had to fill in as father for his orphaned niece.

Image
Image

And then of course his distinctive voice was immediately identifiable when I watched Charlie's Angels in the 70s, even though we never saw him (I think that the occasional back-of-head shot was not Forsythe).

And in the 80s, I was a big fan of Dynasty, and a group of us used to get together every week to watch it and party.

Image

So, he was kind of a constant for me, in one of my favorite shows of just about every decade.

And now "Blake Carrington"'s brother "Ben" has also died: Christopher Cazenove died on Wednesday, at age 65.

It's on the other thread. But again, it is utterly terrible. It's no wonder they've ordered a week of national mourning.

There's a hell of a lot of Polish people in Ealing, some of my neighbours in my building are Polish. I'm friends with a couple just down the hall from my flat. I'm truly sad and sorry for them as a country.

They're good people, the Poles. I like them a lot. They've been through a lot of shit, but they just quietly get on with it and try to move forward without making a big drama. They're very pragmatic as a culture.

He was an interesting fellow (The President). One of a pair of identical twins, they were childhood stars in Poland. They were then involved in the Solidarity movement which helped the effort to end Communism in central and eastern Europe. The President was a Conservative Catholic but also a great supporter of welfare programs. He was socially conservative, but economically socialist (not unusual for a Catholic). His brand of Nationalism was a thorn in the side of both Russia and the EU. The twins ended up in the highest positions of government. President AND Prime Minister. No wonder the PM was in tears when informed of the tragedy.

Just seen on my internet news that Lynn Redgrave has passed away

Actress Lynn Redgrave died Sunday after a seven-year battle with breast cancer, according to her family.
Redgrave, 67, was surrounded by her children at her Connecticut home when she died, the family said in a statement Monday morning.
The star of stage, film and television was twice nominated for an Academy Award: for best actress in 1966 for her role in "Georgy Girl" and for best supporting actress in the 1998 film "Gods and Monsters."

I've always really liked her and her bubbly personality. Another very sad loss for the Redgrave family.

May she sleep peacefully.

That's sad news. You're right, she was the bubbly one, although Vanessa has been much more famous in general. I loved Georgy Girl, and I saw Lynn in person in a Jerry Lewis show called Hellzapoppin'. After the show, my parents and I went to the back of the building and hung around the stage door. Lynn eventually came out - I was way too shy to approach her, but my mother did and got her to sign my program. Of course, she also embarrassed me by going on about how much I loved to read British literature - as if that were relevant! Ms. Redgrave was very gracious. Jerry Lewis, not so much - he had his people come out periodically to tell us he would come out soon, and then slipped out a different exit and sped away in his limo.

A beautiful woman with a beautiful voice and heart. She'll be missed.

A classy lady, and I loved her 'Stormy Weather' in particular.

Very sad news indeed. She was the epitome of class, besides having a wonderful voice.

Terry's uncle by marriage photographed her in early years. He never spoke much about his work but one day at dinner he was dishing out some gem's and I remember him saying that of the famous ladies he had photographed one of his favorites was Lena Horne. She was a very nice and an absolute lady. High praise coming from him.

Oh, I loved Art Linkletter's House Party when I was a really little kid! He was an institution then - I'll bet not many young people know who he is now.
