Hall & Oates are another band that had some good solid pop songs back in the day, but that ain't one of them.

From one of my favourite albums of the early nineties- Dusk. I'm very fond of this album, because I used to listen to it a lot in the studio I worked in when I was in my early twenties- kind of special memories associated with it...

the The - Love Is Stronger Then Death (sorry the vid is disabled as a direct link):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2RtUv_P ... re=related

This is the intro track to an album called 'Anatomic' by the Afro Celts, from about 2006. It doesn't sound as nearly as good as the acoustics on the album- they're very good if you buy the cd! Phwoar! It knocked me out when I first bought the album and heard the opening track. This Youtube version doesn't fully do it justice acoustically, but it's still not bad.

Top song Bonnie! That's from the same album- Dusk. I used to play that album all the time in the studio, for several months, back in the early nineties. Matt Johnson's not actually that great a singer, but he makes great music with superb (and often interesting) lyrics.

This is a terrific live track from their previous album (Mind Bomb) recorded at the Royal Albert Hall. I still can't believe listening to it, nowadays, how very prophetic this track was and has become, from when I first heard it- even though it was about twenty years ago...

Y'know, I don't have any of their albums, but just perusing their songs I've realized how many good ones they had and how much I've heard. Of course it also makes me wonder what I've missed because there are always a few gems on any given album that never get much air play.

If you ever want to buy any of Matt Johnson's (or the The's) albums Bonnie, the best are: 'Infected'- which is a very 80's sound influenced album, 'Mind Bomb'- which is somewhere in between the 80's and 90's in terms of influence in sound with quite a few guest performances from people like Sinaed O'Connor and also has Johnny Marr- the Smith's guitarist throughout, and 'Dusk'- which is very a nineties style influenced album and more raw guitar and blues infuenced.

This is from his last album HankyPanky- a tribute to Hank Williams:

The The- I Saw The Light (wont embed):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCn2GSkKKT4

I also thought you might like these two tracks-

the The: Helpline Operator (live)-

the The: Kingdom of Rain (it has that weird post eighties vibe to it, but also kind of sounds like it was still from the late eighties with the Sinead O'Connor vocals- but sort of stuck around that time before the nineties began musically- it's a type of song style that's stuck in time/history in terms of style)-

And one of my fave's from the eighties:

the The: That Was The Day (love this song- even if it's so simple)-

Don't mess with the Bunny.

Interesting track. Do you know what, it's funny. I never heard of them, even back in the day...And they 'sound' British as well! Not sure if they are...it made me chuckle that they may be, and I didn't know.

If you're going to buy any 'the The' cd's Bonnie, as an intro to them and Matt Johnson- 'Dusk' is a good place to start. Their 'sound' shifted quite a lot from the eighties to the nineties- their albums sound quite different over time. 'Mind Bomb' is the next best album to get, then 'Infected'- which is very eighties in sound. Also if you ever buy that particular album (Infected), make sure you get the version with the extra three 12" track remixes on it at the end- coz they are wicked ;-)

I heard the latest pre release up coming track from Florence and the Machine a few days ago- I think it's bloody awesome. Her new album comes out on the 6th July. I reckon it's going to be the number one Brit album this year. I haven't heard a bad track released from that upcoming album yet. All of it excellent, top notch, and very interesting- she reminds me of Kate Bush somewhere, though her songs aren't quite the same. What I like about it is you have to listen to the tracks to let them grow on you, and they really do. Powerful stuff, raw and pagan, and really interestingly mixed in style and composition.

There's no video yet. Florence and the Machine- Cosmic Love:

I love it. You're going to turn me into a fan of Florence. I'm not complaining, it's cool stuff. It makes me want to run around a Renaissance Faire barefoot in a floaty diaphanous dress.

By the way, Kissing the Pink is a Brit band from back in the day, and I've only heard a few of their songs, apparently they put out several albums.

Love the Supreme's - particularly early Diana Ross (and Mary Wilson), ever since I was back in college as a teenager. I still have some it on vinyl I bought, second hand, at the time. And that was in the late 80's, when it was still 'classic' and from a previous music generation back then.

Not in the same league at all, and a different genre. But I still dig this song. From their 2005 album 'Road to Rouen'.

Lol. You guys probably don't fully get the nostalgia factor. Bands like that were part of the early British New Wave/Post Punk/New Romantic scene, just after 1980. They helped give birth to many other bands of that genre like Ultravox (in it's early Midge Ure phase- they went shit later on) and other bands like the Cure, and many others. It's just part of a music scene that formed some of my childhood.

The Pretenders were fantastic, though I probably would have picked Brass in Pocket. I even still remember the video when the song first came out.

I still have that Big Country song on 7" vinyl Bonnie. I must have bought it when I was about 14 I think!

Something from early this century. Love this song to bits (though no doubt Tony will hate it!)...

Oh I so get the nostalgia factor Ben. The New Wave/Brit Invasion was all during my high school and college years. I went out dancing at the bar to all of these tunes. When the Bay City Rollers were making it big over here I was around the age of 12 or so. When I watched that Youtube video I posted, I knew every word to that song even though I haven't heard it in almost 30 years. I just never want to be one of those people who only like the music they grew up with. New, more and different are all good with me.

It is interesting how music can immediately take you back to a time and place though, or how you can still remember every last word to a song that totally annoyed the shit out of you 15 years ago.

This one reminds me of high school and friday night football games.

Nice try Hotshot. But no coconut for you Sunshine! :smt002

If you're referring to comparative styles of music, or 'what has been done before' you'll find that in music, like all art, everything has been 'done before' going back through history ad finitum. What makes a piece of music refreshing or 'new' is the way people take different existing styles of music and combine them in different ways as they evolve. Having said that, even that's not that relevant really when listening to a piece of music. It's just whether it get's to your soul or not, and you enjoy it. No one can define that, it's purely subjective. For example, I don't really dig Beethoven that much- too much bombast and 'military style' themes. Though I recognise that it's brilliantly done. However I love a lot of Russian classical composers from the 1800's, particularly Mussorgsky. There's something poetic and 'other worldly' about his music that I find deeply human and passionate, and it get's me inside.

But enough of that! I haven't finished dedicating some songs to you that I personally think you WILL REALLY REALLY REALLY enjoy!!! :smt012 ;-)

This one's from good old slightly nutty but rather terrific Alison Goldfrapp. Would have loved to have seen this concert...

I used to love the Talking Heads back in my teens. I think you have to accept, with a band like that, part of it is also down to the 'performance' and the visual style that they imbued which is also part of the package of the band.

Weren't The Animals known by a different name in the US? I vaguely remember that. I had the '64 Animals album, the US version with House of the Rising Sun, on cassette tape years ago. I've put all my old cassette tapes in several boxes under my bed after I got them out of my parent's loft last year. I should really sort them out- I have loads of the buggers, some copied, but most originals. Thing is, what do you do with cassette tapes anymore?

A change of musical tact...

I got into listening to this terrific Iranian Persian female singer a few years ago. She does a lot of interesting stuff- example she also made an album called 'Portals of Grace' which is predominantly in 'old' Breton and influenced by European medieval music. She was also with a band callad Niyaz. This is from another album called 'Elysium for the Brave'.

It's kind of interesting/ strange/ sort of surreal watching that video and listening to the song knowing they're personal history today. I do think her best work was with Ike though, funny irony. I never liked her later solo stuff after the 70's particularly. Though thankfully she got rid of the bastard for her own personal sake.

I thought I'd give you another Goldfrapp song Tony. You'll like this one ;-) This is one of my favourites of hers.

I love that album. But that's not a good cover Tony....

If you can make it the through waffle that Young came up with at the beginning of this live session- it's still pure creme. From one of the best albums ever- Harvest.

I have never been a fan of Neil Young. I just can't stand his voice. He's written some great songs, I just don't like hearing him sing them.
I feel the same way about Bob Dylan too. Dylan has written some of the most amazing and beautiful songs, but he shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a microphone with them.

Never liked U2 or the other.

Heard this today, haven't heard it in a while.
If you think it sucks it's because you're very odd.
