Actually, I probably partly agree with you there. He does have a a bit of a weedy/whiney voice. I have some live stuff of his where it shows even more- it's not the most melodic of voices...I think Wrecking Ball is one of the songs he manages to really strangle, ironically. I just think Harvest is such a classic album in terms of the quality of the songs it kind of cancels that out for me.

Can't believe this song is now over a decade old. I bought the album on it's release when she wasn't very well known sometime in 1996/7.

Hey, that's quite cool Bonnie. D'you know what? I've never heard of them. So I Googled them and found out they were a French band who came out of the same scene/locale as Daft Punk and Air. When I saw the name and listened to the track I thought they might be an indie American band slightly 'mimicking' British/Euro indie music trends- which seems to be happening a little with some Stateside indie bands at the moment. But I was wrong. They're not really well known here in the UK at the present.

I'm still in a Beth Orton- Trailer Park vibe. When I first bought this album years ago I listened to it to death. She hasn't really done anything as good since, and I haven't listened to it for years, but it still sounds as good now as it did when I first heard it. I was playing the album while I was cleaning my flat today.

Sorry about the Youtube vid included, it's an album track with no official video.

Beth Orton- I Wish I Never Saw The Sunshine (who said all cover versions were bad!)

I think I'm in a revisit favourite albums mood at the moment. I was listening to Polly Jean Harvey's- 'Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea' this afternoon while doing some work. Haven't listened to it in a long while. Still sounds wicked. :smt023

That's one of my fav's of hers as well Bonnie. That particular album's that it's from is also very good. It's from her prior album (To Bring You My Love), to the last PJ track I put up. PJ's one of my favourite female British artists mainly because she's very interesting, bucks trends and just does her own thing- she remind's me a little of Patti Smith. I've got a bit of a thing for interesting and quirky female singers ;-). I've been a fan of her's ever since her days with John Parrish back in the early nineties. I even like her when she also sometimes does something even weirder than that, and more off the beaten track...

I almost put that particular track up as well, but I didn't want to freak poor Tony out ;-) :smt012

...And talking of Tony. I think it's time for a little more 80's :smt023

I still have this on vinyl- on a full album of several 12" extended remixes called League Unlimited Orchestra. I don't know whether the Americans of my generation had the same fascination for buying 12" extended remixes back then in the 80's, but that was the 'thing to do' over here in the UK at the time, and not buy the 7" single. I still love this particular version today just because of the longer extended base line at the start :-)

The Human League- The Lebanon:

Nb. You can faintly hear the wonderful vinyl crackle at the beginning- this person recorded this direct from the original copy. Love it!

12" remixes were a big thing over here too, but I rarely bought any. Mostly you would hear them in the dance clubs.

You know what. I actually prefer the Trent Reznor cover. Adam Ant is a bit of a nut bag. Is that a NIN track, or just Trent Reznor solo? I have a couple of NIN albums- Pretty Hate Machine, and a more obscure album they did called Further Down The Spiral.

kitchenwitch wrote:I always liked that song, a little more heard edged than Don't You Want Me.

I think that's a regular factor of a lot of those 'classic' bands of the time. They started out great, got big, went mainstream, peaked at some point, then diminished in actual quality over time as they got more commercial. Ultravox is a classic case. Genius back in 1980- 1984, utter crap by about 1986. I could use the same analogy with U2- though over a longer period. The early Human League stuff- like The Lebanon was wicked, but it diminished over time. I think they peaked at about the time they released 'Don't You Want Me'. That was actually the first 7" I ever bought. My view is they got steadily worse after that.

This is from the same era- from the same album as that track you mentioned. I still have this 12" on vinyl as well. Still sounds wicked- in an eighties way :-)

The Human League- Love Action 12"

Note FAC51- The Hacienda was the name of the Manchester night club that spawned many of these eighties British bands, and later alternatively helped create the 90's European house music dance scene, as well as the 90's British indie music scene. At one time in the eighties it was even listed by the US music press as the most famous night club in the world. Sandy would know about this being a New Order and a Joy Division fan ;-)

It's NIN, a "hidden" track on the Broken EP. By hidden I mean that on the cassette (yes, I had it on cassette) there was 10 minutes of silence on the B side of the tape before you got to that song and this one:

I was a huge NIN fan back in the day, I have quite a few of their albums and I've seen them in concert several times. Angry music, but I would crank it up and get my household chores done in record time. I had a thing for Trent as well.

I like that track. Though it always makes me chuckle that they were *re-branded* for the US as *The English* Beat. The band's name was actually just- 'The Beat'. That's how we always knew them when I was a wee Dragon in the UK back in the 80's...Sean put up a track of theirs before on here a while back, and I said the same thing already. OK- I'm boring! It's just an English thing ;-) Why did you rename them in the US? What's goin' on USA? Do you therefore mean The Beatles became= The English Beatles, The Rolling Stones= The English Rolling Stones, The Verve= The English Verve? What's the deal with the renaming of bands (and foreign films) thing in the US? *I'm teasing!- a little* ;-)

...Completely changing the entire music vibe of this current music thread. Something from the early nineties. Personally, I still love this track- you can take that to the bank. Nothing like a bit of early 90's British goth rock...

Tony, is definitely going to love this.....Na'h what I mean ;-)

OOOOH, Sisters of Mercy, good choice.

I want More.

The Beat was called The English Beat in the US because there already was a band called The Beat that was popular (?! I hadn't heard of them) here at the time so it was due to legalities and to avoid confusion. I'm not sure exactly what criteria is used to determine who gets first dibs on a band name, but I believe it has something to due with how long you've been using that name and how many records you've made/sold under that name. I had some friends in a band they called Rhythm Method, but they had to change it because there was another band using the name already that apparently had some commercial success before my friend's band did.
They ended up changing their name to Rhythm Corps. So you see, corporate America isn't singling the Brits out, they're assholes to everyone. :smt002 Although you guys won out with The Verve. There was an American band called The Verve (from Michigan too) but they had to change their name to The Verve Pipe because the name was taken.

Nice choice of chill out Cherry :-). I haven't heard of them before. Reminds me a bit of Chicane, and also John Hopkins a little.

This is not exactly a similar track, but that track reminds a me little of other Chicane tracks- Original Autumn Tactics mix, Salt Water....

Chicane - No Ordinary Morning:

Jon Hopkins - Second Sense (sorry- slightly naff non official track/Youtube video embedded with it!):

...And if you've got a full ten minutes to 'waste' :-) this is nearly all of the full mix. I think it's beautiful, as a piece of music.

Jon Hopkins- Circle Second Sense:

It's a cracker innit Bonnie :smt023 I particularly like some of the Clash references they use. Hard Fi are interesting as a band, but a little bit hit and miss sometimes. 'Stars of CCTV'- which that track is from is a good album, but their last album was more than a bit ropey in my view.

This is for Cherry, who's clearly in an ambient/ progressive house dance mood ;-) Tony's going to hate it...but I think it kicks.

Yesterday I was listening to some vinyl on my son's turntable jamming out to some things I haven't heard in a long time.
It did make me realize how spoiled we've gotten with CDs. With an album there are only 5 or 6 songs you get to listen to before you have to flip the record over, and you can't just press a button and skip the song you don't like that much. And there is no random play either. You have to listen to the whole record. What a concept.

I'm going to be the PRT Video Jukebox party poop for a change, instead of ole' Tonyboy just for once ;-). I hate ELO. Sorry. :smt003

I know exactly what you mean by listening to old vinyl though Bonnie. There's nothing like it. Buying a piece of vinyl, back in the day, was like buying a piece of tangible art. The way you listened to it was totally different too, as you say. There's just something about analogue media that digital electronic media doesn't always have. It's like celluloid silver halide based film for a photographer- another original analogue media. There's just something about it that makes it different. Part of it is the tactile element. The other is something to do with the reproduction difference that I still can't quite put my finger on.

Anyway, I just finished the fourth season of The Wire. They always do a follow on montage, set to a piece of music, right at the end of each season. I saw the season four finale the other night and they used a classic track I haven’t heard in a long time. I thought it was a pretty good choice to end Season Four.

It reminds me a little of a band called St Germaine. I have a couple of their albums- both excellent. Back in about 2000/1 I don't think you could go into a London pub, or bar, and not hear this track in the back ground- on a regular basis. I liked it a lot at first, but I did get a bit tired of repeatedly hearing it back then!
